Text to speech: a script read by a generated voice

Text to speech turns a written script into spoken audio in a chosen voice, stock or cloned, often with controls for tone, pace and pronunciation. From 4 source pages, read 2026-09-25; no maker pays to be listed.

Descript reads a script in a stock voice or a clone of the user's own. Adobe Firefly's page offers a choice of voices, tones and accents. Vyond's clips use voices from outside providers, and D-ID keeps a voice library to preview.

Text to speech is where a drama's dialogue is most easily fixed: changing a line means regenerating a few seconds of audio, not a shot.

The pages differ on direction. Tags and emotion settings, as at Morphic, go further than choosing a voice.

Lip sync is a separate step. A generated voice laid on a talking face still has to be matched to the mouth.

2From a production guide

Set beside “Text to speech”, two passages from the guides SceneMixer publishes about its own pipeline:

Every character comes out of the script read with a voice described in words — age, weight, pace, where it sits.

SceneMixer, How Character Voices Work (read 2026-10-13)

That is SceneMixer's core design: characters live in a persistent asset library with locked reference art, and every segment that features a character is generated against those references — same face in episode 1 and episode 50.
